BOS Projects
BOS Foundation is an Indonesian non-profit, non-governmental, environmental organization dedicated to
the conservation of orangutans and their habitat through the involvement of local people. BOS started as a group of researchers of the Tropenbos Kalimantan Program and the school children of Balikpapan in 1991 and formalized its existence in 1994 through the incorporation of the Balikpapan Orangutan Society (BOS).
After the great fires of 1997/1998 hundreds of orangutan victims needed to be dealt with in a large scale operational way and the Balikpapan Orangutan Survival Foundation was established.
In 2003, with the further expansion of the activities to other locations in Kalimantan and many more activities being supported through some 12 partner organisations abroad, the name was changed to the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.
Starting off with a few orangutan babies in 1991, BOS is presently taking care of more than 750 orangutans and has released more than 400 orangutans to suitable forests in East Kalimantan, and more than 100 to forest islands in Central Kalimantan.
BOS consists of a group of some 350 dedicated permanent experts and staff, presently running the worlds’ largest primate conservation project in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and it is audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
The foundation has a board of directors, supervised by Ir. Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo, former Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, who is also the patron of the foundation. The board of directors is assisted by the scientific advisory board, which comprises orangutan experts and other specialists from Indonesia and around the world.
The board of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation supervises the operational office of the foundation which is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
