The biggest threat to the orangutan is the production of palm oil. Until now, palm oil as an ingredient was often hidden, described merely as generic vegetable oil.

On 13 December, a new EU law took effect requiring that palm oil be specifically listed as an ingredient in foods that contain it.

Production of palm oil is the greatest threat to the orangutan, as the orangutans’ home, the rainforest, is leveled to make way for palm oil plantations. Until now, palm oil as an ingredient was often hidden, described merely as generic vegetable oil. This new EU directive enables you as a consumer to actively decide whether you want to buy products containing palm oil and to seek out and buy certified palm oil that is produced with respect for nature and the orangutan.
